Team Magma's Groudon EX comes from the special expansion Double Crisis from the X & Y era, released on March 25, 2015. Double Crisis was the first subset released during the X & Y era and had a relatively short print run, making many of the cards difficult to obtain. This card is significant as it was a unique style of full art card (no texture and special style of illustration) when initially released. Additionally, Groudon is a fan favourite from Pokémon Ruby, contributing to the popularity of the card.
Team Magma's Groudon EX saw no competitive playability and usage during the standard format that it was released in, primarily due to low damage output and a poor ability (Power Saver).
