Wham-O Giant Comics

Series

Published in 1967 by the Wham-O Manufacturing Company, Wham-O Giant Comics was an experimental comic book project conceived by company founders Richard Knerr and Arthur "Spud" Melin. Designed with Disney animator and advisor Ward Kimball, the series was intended to serve as a content platform to promote Wham-O toys while recreating the experience of reading broadsheet newspaper Sunday funnies. Measuring an extraordinary 21 inches by 14.25 inches, the issue stands as the largest traditional American comic book ever published by surface area.

The premiere issue functioned as an anthology containing original sci-fi, superhero, and humor strips contributed by seasoned industry professionals. Notable creative contributions included artwork by veteran Golden Age illustrators Lou Fine and Marvin Stein, alongside work by John Stanley and Ernie Colón. Designed as a quarterly publication, the issue introduced original characters such as Radian and Galaxo, accompanied by integrated commercial features for Wham-O products like the Frisbee and Super Ball.

Despite heavy television promotion, Wham-O Giant Comics #1 became a one-shot issue and the title was cancelled. The book faced severe distribution hurdles because its oversized dimensions prevented it from fitting standard newsstand racks, forcing reliance on toy store and department store displays. Additionally, its 98-cent retail price was significantly higher than the standard 12-cent comic price of the era. Today, the issue holds specialized archival interest as an ambitious publishing anomaly from the Silver Age of comics, with surviving high-grade copies valued by collectors for their novelty and fragile newsprint construction.
