Published by Timely Comics in Fall 1947, The Human Torch #27 showcases late Golden Age interior work penciled by Syd Shores and produced under the editorial direction of Stan Lee. This 7.5 CGC-graded copy captures a pivotal transitional era in comic publishing, featuring the original Human Torch and Toro in an adversarial story against the Asbestos Lady. Surviving unrestored mid-to-high grade copies from this pre-code post-war period remain exceptionally scarce due to declining newsprint circulation and low retention rates.

The Human Torch debuted in Fall 1940 as a quarterly superhero anthology series published by Timely Comics, the predecessor to modern Marvel Comics. Launched following the commercial success of Marvel Comics #1 in 1939, the title served as a primary solo vehicle for the original Human Torch, an android named Jim Hammond created by writer and artist Carl Burgos. The series was overseen by publisher Martin Goodman and editor Joe Simon during its initial launch, providing a expanded platform for one of the publisher's foundational superhero characters.
Throughout its initial run in the 1940s, The Human Torch documented major creative and narrative evolutions within Golden Age comic book publishing. Early issues introduced key supporting characters, including the hero's teenage sidekick Toro, and featured backup stories starring Bill Everett's Sub-Mariner, which led to some of the earliest continuous multi-title crossovers in comic book history. During World War II, under the editorial direction of Stan Lee, the title shifted its narrative focus away from local crime to wartime propaganda, featuring stories that depicted the titular characters fighting Axis forces.
The series holds historical significance as a primary anchor of Timely's Golden Age publishing line, running for 38 issues before its cancellation in 1949. As public interest in superhero titles declined in the post-war period, the series integrated secondary genres, including crime, humor, and text stories, to maintain newsprint circulation. Surviving physical copies from this volume remain primary archival artifacts that illustrate the structural transition from early superhero anthologies to the multi-genre strategy that defined late 1940s comic book publishing.
