Marvel Comics published The Further Adventures of Indiana Jones from 1983 to 1986, following the success of the 1981 film Raiders of the Lost Ark. The series was launched by writer Archie Goodwin and artist John Buscema, with later contributions from creators such as David Michelinie, Herb Trimpe, and Steve Ditko. Unlike the film adaptations, this monthly title was an ongoing endeavor to expand the narrative universe beyond the established cinematic scripts. It ran for 34 issues and was the first sustained effort to develop the character through a serial literary medium.
The series is noted for introducing original antagonists and companions that did not appear in the films, such as the rival archaeologist Ian McIver. It also served as a bridge between the release of the first film and its 1984 prequel, Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom. During its run, the editorial team navigated complex licensing requirements from Lucasfilm, which necessitated a careful balance between original storytelling and maintaining the visual likeness of the actors. Technical transitions in the series also reflected broader industry shifts, as Marvel experimented with different inkers and colorists to match the pulp adventure aesthetic of the 1930s setting.
The collectible interest in this series stems from its role as the foundation for the Indiana Jones "Expanded Universe." It established a precedent for non-cinematic storytelling that later informed dark horse comics and various novels in the 1990s. While it does not feature the first appearance of the character in comics, which occurred in the three issue Raiders of the Lost Ark adaptation, it remains a primary reference for the character’s development during the peak of the franchise's initial popularity. The series is recognized by archivists for its preservation of the period-accurate adventure genre during a decade dominated by the rise of the superhero "Bronze Age."
