Len Sandeman

1923 - 2017 MSA

Leonard Anthony Sandeman (1923–2017) was a British-born Canadian painter, commercial artist, and educator known primarily for his contributions to the arts community in Manitoba. Born in London, England, Sandeman developed an early interest in the visual arts through visits to major London galleries. During the Second World War, he served as a navigator in the Royal Air Force, a role that first brought him to Canada for training at the Rivers Navigation School in Manitoba. Following his military service in South Asia, he immigrated to Canada in 1947 and settled in Winnipeg.

Sandeman’s professional career began in the commercial arts, where he worked in the Advertising Art department of the T. Eaton Company. In 1963, he co-founded the commercial art firm Sandeman-Morley. He began painting watercolours and exhibiting his work in 1948, eventually becoming a prominent figure in regional artist organizations. He joined the Winnipeg Sketch Club in 1952, later serving as its president from 1961 to 1962. In 1956, he was elected to full membership in the Manitoba Society of Artists, an organization he led as president from 1964 to 1966.

In 1974, Sandeman moved to Brandon, Manitoba, to establish the commercial art program at Crocus Plains Regional Secondary School. He taught at the institution until his retirement in 1987. Throughout his career and retirement, he remained a prolific watercolourist, frequently conducting workshops and exhibiting in galleries across Canada. His artistic practice often drew inspiration from the natural landscapes of the Canadian prairies and lakes, which he documented through sketches and photography.

In addition to his work in painting, Sandeman was an active woodworker and woodturner in his later years. His artistic contributions have been recognized through awards at various juried exhibitions. His work is represented in public collections, including the University of Winnipeg art collection. He resided in Manitoba until his death in 2017.
