Les Brandt (1950–2025) was a Canadian visual artist and arts advocate based in Winnipeg, Manitoba. Born Leslie David Brandt on March 27, 1950, in Winkler, Manitoba, he spent his early years in Grand Rapids and Loon Straits before moving to Winnipeg at age twelve. He received his post-secondary education at the Canadian Mennonite Bible College and later attended the University of Manitoba, where he earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts in 1979.
Brandt’s artistic practice was characterized by a vibrant and colorful style, often utilizing mixed media, acrylics, pencil, and ink. His subject matter frequently focused on the Canadian landscape, city scenes, and wildlife, with a particular interest in the geography of Northern Manitoba and Lake Winnipeg. He began exhibiting his work in juried and group exhibitions in 1979 and held his first solo exhibition in 1983. In addition to his studio work, he contributed to the regional arts community as an instructor, teaching at the Forum Art Institute from 1983 to 1985 and conducting workshops for the Westman Arts Association.
Beyond his creative output, Brandt was a significant figure in professional artist organizations. He joined Canadian Artists’ Representation (CARFAC) in 1981 and served as the organization's President from 1982 to 1984. He was also a member of the Manitoba Society of Artists (MSA), which he joined in 1981. Throughout his career, he received several professional accolades, including a "Best in Show" award from the Manitoba Society of Artists in 1984 and multiple grants from the Manitoba Arts Council for material and special projects.
The work of Les Brandt is represented in various public and corporate collections across Canada. His art is held in the permanent collection of the Canada Council Art Bank, as well as by the Province of Manitoba and the Toronto Dominion Bank. Following his death on July 12, 2025, a celebration of his life and career was held at the Winnipeg Art Gallery, reflecting his long standing connection to the Manitoba arts community.
