Sir William Russell Flint

1880 - 1969 RA, PPRWS

Sir William Russell Flint was a Scottish painter and illustrator. Born in Edinburgh, he received his early art education at Daniel Stewart's College and the Royal Institution School of Art in Edinburgh. Between 1894 and 1900, he completed a six-year apprenticeship as a lithographic draughtsman before moving to London. In London, he studied at the Heatherley School of Fine Art and worked as a medical illustrator, later joining the staff of The Illustrated London News from 1904 to 1908.

During the First World War, Flint served in the Royal Naval Volunteer Reserve and the Royal Air Force, working as an Admiralty inspector on airships. Following the war, he devoted himself entirely to fine art, traveling extensively throughout Europe to paint landscapes and figurative subjects. He worked primarily in watercolor and oil, developing a distinct technique for handling dry-brush applications and fluid washes.

Flint earned professional associations with several major art organizations. He was elected an Associate of the Royal Academy (ARA) in 1924 and became a full Royal Academician (RA) in 1933. From 1936 to 1956, he served as President of the Royal Society of Painters in Water Colours (PRWS). He was knighted for his services to art in 1947.

Throughout his career, Flint contributed work to major public art institutions, including retrospective presentations organized at the Royal Academy's Diploma Gallery in London in 1962. He continued to produce paintings and illustrations until his death in London in 1969. His work is preserved in permanent museum collections, including the National Galleries of Scotland and the Tate.
