X-Force launched in August 1991, created by writer Fabian Nicieza and artist Rob Liefeld, spinning out of the final issues of The New Mutants. The series transformed the teenage mutant students into a proactive military strike team under the leadership of Cable, a time-traveling soldier. The first issue sold 5 million copies, making it the second best-selling American comic book of all time after X-Men #1 (1991). The initial lineup featured Cable, Cannonball, Boom Boom, Warpath, Shatterstar, Feral, and Domino, with the team operating from a underground base and utilizing military tactics rather than the X-Men's more reactive approach. Liefeld's distinctive artistic style, characterized by extreme anatomy and numerous pouches and weapons, defined the visual aesthetic of early 1990s comics.
The series exemplified the speculator boom of the early 1990s comics market. The polybagged first issue included one of five different trading cards featuring X-Force members, encouraging multiple purchases. Liefeld departed after issue #9 due to creative differences, with various artists including Greg Capullo and Tony Daniel continuing his style. Nicieza remained as writer through issue #43, developing storylines involving Cable's time-traveling nemesis Stryfe, the mysterious organization known as the Externals, and crossovers with other X-titles. The series regularly placed in the top 10 monthly sales charts throughout 1991-1993, though sales declined significantly after the comics market crash of 1993.
X-Force's impact on the comic industry was substantial despite mixed critical reception. The series popularized the concept of "extreme" heroes who used lethal force, influencing numerous Image Comics titles after Liefeld co-founded that company in 1992. Characters introduced in X-Force, particularly Deadpool (who debuted in New Mutants #98 but became a recurring villain in X-Force), Shatterstar, and Cable, became major Marvel properties. The series ran for 129 issues until 2002, undergoing multiple creative team changes and tonal shifts, including a critically acclaimed run by Peter Milligan and Mike Allred that completely reimagined the concept as a celebrity mutant team.
The original X-Force established templates for 1990s team comics: morally ambiguous heroes, time-travel plots, and emphasis on action over character development. While often criticized for prioritizing style over substance, the series' commercial success influenced Marvel's publishing strategy throughout the decade. X-Force has been relaunched multiple times, with various volumes exploring different iterations of the concept. The original team and concept have appeared in other media, including animated series and the Deadpool 2 film (2018), where the team's formation played a significant plot role, introducing the concept to mainstream audiences.
