Marvel's Star Wars comic series launched in April 1977, two months before the first film's release, with a six-issue adaptation of the movie. The series proved crucial to Marvel's financial survival during the late 1970s, with issue #1 selling over 1 million copies through multiple printings. Writer Roy Thomas and artist Howard Chaykin handled the initial adaptation, after which the series continued with original stories. By the early 1980s, the series was selling approximately 300,000 copies monthly, making it one of Marvel's most successful titles. The comic held the unique position of being the only Star Wars storytelling medium between films, creating expanded universe content before that term existed.

The early 1980s marked the series' creative peak under the team of writer David Michelinie and artists Walt Simonson, Tom Palmer, and later Ron Frenz. Issues #39-44 (1980) featured the acclaimed adaptation of The Empire Strikes Back, while original storylines filled gaps between films. Notable arcs included the search for Han Solo (#68-80, 1983), the Tarkin superweapon story (#51-52, 1981), and the introduction of the Nagai alien species (#87-95, 1984-1985). The series had to work within strict limitations set by Lucasfilm: no stories about Luke's father, limited use of Darth Vader, and Han Solo remaining frozen in carbonite until Return of the Jedi. Despite restrictions, writers created memorable original characters including Lumiya (later revealed as Shira Brie), Kiro, and Dani, while exploring the Star Wars universe beyond the films.

The series faced unique challenges in maintaining continuity and reader interest between film releases. Following Return of the Jedi's adaptation (#1-4 of the movie adaptation mini-series, 1983), the monthly series continued with post-Jedi stories, exploring the Alliance of Free Planets' formation and the Empire's fragmentation. Writer Jo Duffy took over from issue #70 (1983) through the series' end, developing character relationships and introducing the concept of multiple Imperial factions vying for control. Artists including Cynthia Martin and Bob McLeod maintained visual consistency while working without photo reference for the actors. Sales gradually declined after Return of the Jedi, dropping to approximately 125,000 copies by 1985.

Marvel's Star Wars concluded with issue #107 in July 1986, ending a nine-year run that produced more Star Wars content than existed in any other medium at the time. The series generated an estimated $20 million in revenue for Marvel throughout its run and helped establish the viability of media tie-in comics. Many concepts introduced in the Marvel series influenced later Expanded Universe materials, though the comics were largely deemed non-canonical after Disney's acquisition of Lucasfilm. Characters like Lumiya were later incorporated into official Star Wars novels, while the comics' depiction of post-Return of the Jedi events provided a template for exploring the saga's continuation before official sequels existed.

The Marvel Star Wars comics demonstrated the commercial potential of licensed properties in comics and established patterns for expanding film franchises through sequential art. The series maintained higher quality than typical licensed comics of the era, attracting top Marvel talent including Archie Goodwin, Al Williamson, and Klaus Janson. Letter columns revealed an engaged readership that included both comic fans and Star Wars enthusiasts new to the medium. The complete run has been collected in various formats, including Marvel Epic Collections and omnibus editions, recognizing its historical importance as the first major expansion of the Star Wars universe beyond the films. When Marvel reacquired Star Wars comic rights in 2015, their new series paid homage to the original run through variant covers and references, acknowledging its foundational role in Star Wars publishing history.
