The Walking Dead launched in October 2003, created by writer Robert Kirkman and artist Tony Moore, published by Image Comics as a black-and-white ongoing series. Kirkman pitched the concept as a zombie movie that never ends, focusing on human drama and survival rather than horror action. The first issue sold approximately 7,300 copies, modest numbers that barely justified continuation. Moore illustrated the first six issues before being replaced by Charlie Adlard, who would become the series' definitive artist from issue #7 through its conclusion. The early issues established Rick Grimes, a small-town sheriff who awakens from a coma to find the world overrun by zombies, setting the template for character-driven apocalyptic storytelling.
The series struggled initially, with sales dropping to around 4,000 copies by issue #7, placing it on the verge of cancellation. However, Kirkman's commitment to long-form storytelling and word-of-mouth recommendations gradually built an audience. The first trade paperback collection, released in 2004, found success in bookstores beyond the direct market, introducing the series to non-traditional comic readers. By issue #50 (2008), sales had climbed to approximately 35,000 copies monthly. The series distinguished itself through unpredictable storytelling, with major characters dying without warning, including Shane in issue #6 and Lori in issue #48. Kirkman's approach treated the zombie apocalypse as a backdrop for exploring human nature under extreme circumstances.
The 2010 AMC television adaptation transformed The Walking Dead into a cultural phenomenon. Comic sales exploded, with issue #100 (2012) selling over 380,000 copies, making it the best-selling independent comic in decades. The series reached 1 million copies in print by 2010, expanding to over 50 million by 2019. Monthly sales regularly exceeded 100,000 copies throughout the 2010s, unprecedented for a black-and-white independent title. The comic maintained its own narrative path distinct from the TV series, with significant differences in character fates and story arcs. Major storylines included the prison arc (#13-48), the introduction of the Governor, the arrival at Alexandria Safe-Zone (#70), and the conflict with Negan and the Saviors (#100-126).
The Walking Dead revolutionized the comic industry's relationship with other media. The series demonstrated that independent comics could generate billion-dollar franchises, with the TV adaptation running eleven seasons and spawning multiple spin-offs. The comic's success in bookstores and digital platforms showed alternative distribution models could rival traditional comic shop sales. Kirkman's creator-owned model, where he retained all rights while Image published the series, inspired countless creators to pursue similar deals. The series helped establish Image Comics as the premier publisher for creator-owned work, contributing to the company's evolution from a 1990s superhero publisher to a diverse content creator.
Kirkman shocked readers by concluding the series with issue #193 (July 2019) without advance warning. The surprise ending, marketed as just another regular issue, generated massive media coverage and sales exceeding 250,000 copies. The final issue jumped forward in time to show civilization rebuilt and Rick Grimes remembered as a legendary figure who bridged the old and new worlds. This unconventional conclusion reinforced Kirkman's commitment to storytelling over commercial exploitation. The complete series spans 193 issues plus numerous specials, collected in 32 trade paperback volumes or four omnibus editions.
The Walking Dead's cultural impact extends far beyond sales figures. The series influenced the zombie genre's evolution from pure horror to character-driven drama, inspiring numerous imitators across media. Academic studies have examined its exploration of society breakdown, leadership, and moral compromise in extreme situations. The franchise generated over $1 billion in revenue across comics, television, merchandise, and video games. The comic's success proved that black-and-white books could thrive in a color-dominated market and that mature, violent content could find mainstream acceptance. The series launched careers for numerous creators, with Charlie Adlard becoming one of the industry's most recognizable artists. The Walking Dead stands as perhaps the most successful independent comic series ever published, demonstrating that creator-owned comics could compete with and even surpass corporate-owned superhero properties in cultural relevance and commercial success.
