Mötley Crüe was formed on January 17, 1981, in Los Angeles, California, when bassist Nikki Sixx left the band London and began rehearsing with drummer Tommy Lee. After initially working with guitarist Greg Leon, the duo recruited guitarist Mick Mars, who had placed an advertisement describing himself as a "loud, rude and aggressive guitar player." The band's name originated from Mars, who remembered his former band White Horse being called "a motley looking crew." After modifying the spelling and adding umlauts inspired by Löwenbräu beer, they became Mötley Crüe. The final member to join was vocalist Vince Neil, who was recruited after Mars saw him perform with the band Rock Candy at the Starwood in Hollywood.
The band's breakthrough came with their second album, "Shout at the Devil," released on September 26, 1983. The album sold 200,000 copies in its first two weeks and reached number 17 on the Billboard album chart. It achieved gold status in January 1984, went platinum less than a month later, and eventually reached quadruple platinum status by 1997. The album featured hits like "Looks That Kill" and "Too Young to Fall in Love," while its controversial pentagram cover art and satanic imagery generated significant publicity. This success established Mötley Crüe as key figures in the emerging Los Angeles metal scene and cemented their reputation for both musical prowess and outrageous behavior.
Mötley Crüe reached their commercial peak with 1989's "Dr. Feelgood," which became their only album to top the Billboard 200 chart. The album, recorded after the band's quest for sobriety, sold more than six million copies in the United States and produced hits including the title track, "Kickstart My Heart," and "Without You." Producer Bob Rock worked with each member separately to minimize conflicts during recording, resulting in what many critics and fans consider their finest musical achievement. The album earned Grammy nominations and won the American Music Award for best heavy metal/hard rock album in 1991, while also influencing Metallica to hire Bob Rock for their subsequent albums.
The band experienced significant turbulence throughout the 1990s and 2000s, including lineup changes when Vince Neil left in 1992 and was replaced by John Corabi, returning in 1997. Tommy Lee also departed from 1999 to 2004 to pursue other projects. Despite these changes, Mötley Crüe continued touring and recording, releasing nine studio albums over their career. Their autobiography "The Dirt: Confessions of the World's Most Notorious Rock Band" became a bestseller in 2001, leading to a successful Netflix biopic in 2019 that introduced the band to a new generation of fans.
Mötley Crüe announced their retirement in 2014, signing a "cessation of touring agreement" and performing what was intended to be their final show on December 31, 2015. However, the success of "The Dirt" movie led to their return in 2019, with guitarist John 5 replacing Mick Mars in 2023. Having sold over 100 million records worldwide and achieved seven platinum certifications, the band continues to tour and remains one of the most successful and controversial acts in heavy metal history, known as much for their hedonistic lifestyle and outrageous antics as for their music.
