Cynthia Mackenzie

Cynthia MacKenzie (born 1952) is a Canadian painter known primarily for her work in watercolour. Born in 1952, she pursued her formal artistic education at the Alberta College of Art and Design in Calgary, where she earned a Diploma in Fine Arts Painting and a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree. Her academic training provided a foundation for a career focused on representational techniques and the exploration of the natural world.

Throughout her career, MacKenzie has developed a body of work that emphasizes the flora and fauna of the Canadian landscape. Her technical approach in watercolour is characterized by a focus on light and the detailed rendering of subjects such as deer, bears, and other regional wildlife. She has also produced figurative works, demonstrating a range that includes both animal and human subjects, often executed with a high degree of precision on paper.

Based in Calgary, Alberta, MacKenzie has balanced her studio practice with professional involvement in the regional art community. In addition to her work as a painter, she has utilized her background in fine arts to teach courses in creative arts and meditation, contributing to the educational landscape of her community. Her career spans several decades of active production, with significant works dated from the late 1970s through the late 1990s and into the 2000s.

Her work has been included in various institutional contexts within Western Canada. Examples of her watercolour paintings, such as Proux II and Megan's Day, have been documented in Canadian art archives, reflecting her presence in the regional art market and public sphere. She remains recognized for her technical proficiency in the watercolour medium and her consistent dedication to documenting the environmental and natural history of Western Canada.
