Bjørn Wiinblad

1918 - 2006

Bjørn Wiinblad was a Danish painter, designer, and ceramicist whose work significantly departed from the minimalist functionalism prevalent in mid-twentieth-century Scandinavian design. Born in Copenhagen in 1918, Wiinblad initially trained as a typographer, completing his apprenticeship in 1940. He subsequently pursued formal artistic studies at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts from 1940 to 1943, focusing on painting and illustration under Professor Aksel Jørgensen. During this period, he was introduced to ceramics by a classmate, which became a central medium for his professional career.

Wiinblad’s early professional years involved diverse graphic and decorative commissions. In 1947, he was attached to the United States Embassy in Paris as a poster designer. By the late 1940s, his work gained wider recognition through a recruitment by the Nymølle earthenware factory in Denmark, where he produced a variety of ceramic objects including bowls, plates, and candlesticks. His aesthetic, characterized by whimsical figures, intricate ornamentation, and vibrant colors, began to attract international attention during this time.

In 1957, Wiinblad began a significant and long-standing professional relationship with the Rosenthal porcelain company in Germany, eventually serving as its chief designer for several decades. Among his most prominent contributions to the Rosenthal Studio Line were the Romance dinnerware series, introduced in 1961, and the Magic Flute service in 1969, which took three years to develop due to its complex relief designs inspired by Mozart’s opera. His work with Rosenthal expanded his influence globally, leading to various international commissions and projects.

Wiinblad’s career was marked by a high volume of output across multiple disciplines, including textile design, scenography, and public installations. He designed sets and costumes for major institutions such as the Dallas Ballet, the Royal Danish Ballet, and the Metropolitan Opera House. Notable public projects include a poster for the 1988 Paralympic Games in Seoul and large scale tapestries for the Dallas International Apparel Mart. In 1971, he was commissioned to design a gold-plated dinner service for the 2500th anniversary of the Persian Empire.

The work of Bjørn Wiinblad is represented in the permanent collections of numerous public institutions worldwide. These include the Victoria and Albert Museum in London, the Museum of Modern Art in New York, the Nationalmuseum in Stockholm, and the Museum of Decorative Arts in Copenhagen. Throughout his life, he received several awards for his contributions to design and culture, such as the American-Scandinavian Foundation’s Cultural Prize in 1995. Wiinblad maintained his primary workshop and residence at "The Blue House" in Kongens Lyngby until his death in 2006
