Vera Hand

1925 - 2025

Vera Hand (1925–2023) was a Canadian artist primarily recognized for her work in pastels and her depictions of the prairie landscape. Born Vera Jean Bowering in Winnipeg, Manitoba, on November 29, 1925, she spent the majority of her life and career in the Red River region. After graduating from Cecil Rhodes High School, she worked in the transportation industry before marrying Kenneth Allan Hand in 1951 and dedicating herself more fully to her artistic practice.

Hand was essentially a self-taught artist who specialized in the pastel medium, a choice that allowed her to capture the subtle light and atmospheric conditions of the Canadian Prairies. Her subject matter was deeply rooted in her immediate environment, frequently featuring local flora, such as the prairie crocus, and the expansive river landscapes near her home in Winnipeg. Her style was representational, focused on the precise rendering of natural textures and the seasonal changes of the Manitoba terrain.

Throughout her career, Hand’s work was documented and archived by several major Canadian art institutions. Her professional files are maintained in the Clara Lander Library at the Winnipeg Art Gallery, as well as the library and archives of the National Gallery of Canada and the Art Gallery of Ontario’s Edward P. Taylor Research Library. These records identify her primary technique as drawing and highlight her long standing activity within the Manitoba arts community.

In 2012, Hand relocated to Vancouver, British Columbia, to be closer to her family, where she remained until her death on March 22, 2023. Her work continues to be held in numerous private and institutional collections across Canada and internationally, serving as a visual record of the natural beauty of the mid continental landscape. She is remembered for her technical skill in the challenging medium of pastels and her commitment to documenting the environmental character of Western Canada.
