Edward King Redmore

1860 - 1941

Edward King Redmore (1860–1941) was a British marine and genre painter, born in Kingston upon Hull, England. He was the son of the noted marine artist Henry Redmore, who served as his primary instructor. Under his father's tutelage, Redmore developed a technical proficiency in the depiction of maritime subjects, and it is widely believed he contributed to several of his father's larger compositions during his early career.

Redmore’s professional practice was centered on the coastal landscapes and shipping activities of the British Isles. His work is characterized by a commitment to realism and a meticulous attention to the atmospheric conditions of the sea. He frequently utilized oil on board or canvas to capture a variety of nautical scenes, ranging from calm harbour views to turbulent seascapes featuring ships in distress. His style often employed dramatic lighting and textured brushwork to convey the scale and movement of the water.

In addition to his maritime works, Redmore produced genre paintings that documented Victorian domestic life and rural settings. These compositions often focused on the daily routines of ordinary people, reflecting the aesthetic interests of the late 19th century. While he lived and worked primarily in the Hull and Yorkshire regions, his artistic output followed the broader traditions of British Victorian art, emphasizing narrative detail and moral industriousness.
