Arthur Beech

1876-1948

Arthur Beech was a British-born Canadian artist, educator, and social activist whose life and work significantly influenced the arts community in Winnipeg during the early 20th century.

Born in Lancashire, England in 1876, Beech received his formal artistic training at the Oldham School of Art before emigrating to Canada. He arrived in Winnipeg in 1903 and began his career in Canada working as a carpenter before transitioning to education.

Beech's commitment to arts education was evident throughout his professional life. He began teaching art in Winnipeg schools after 1909, serving at Greenway School (1921-1927), Lord Roberts School (1927-1934), and Kelvin High School. During this time, he also continued his own artistic education, studying at the Winnipeg School of Art from 1916 to 1919 and again from 1920 to 1921.

His influence on Winnipeg's artistic community extended beyond the classroom. Beech was an active member of the Winnipeg Sketch Club, serving as its president from 1923 to 1924. In 1925, he played a key role in revitalizing the Manitoba Society of Artists as one of its founding members. His artistic work demonstrated versatility across various media.

Beyond his artistic pursuits, Beech maintained a strong commitment to social justice and political activism. He was a charter member of the Independent Labour Party and ran as a Labour candidate in the 1914 provincial general election. His political engagement also included membership in the Social Democratic Party and later the Cooperative Commonwealth Federation (the forerunner of today's New Democratic Party). Though defeated by Robert N. Lowery in the 1915 provincial election, his political involvement reflected his dedication to progressive social reform.

Arthur Beech passed away on October 29, 1948, at his home on 602 Rathgar Avenue in Winnipeg and was laid to rest in Elmwood Cemetery. He left behind a lasting legacy as an artist, educator, and advocate who helped shape Winnipeg's cultural and political landscape during a formative period in Canadian history.
