Bibi Lalouette (1858-59) depicts the curly-haired son of J. M. Lalouette, who owned a hotel and restaurant at 5 rue de l'Odéon in Paris where Whistler frequently dined. When Whistler moved to London, he left an unpaid bill but sent partial payment in August 1860. Lalouette's grateful response mentioned that Bibi often spoke of the artist and noted the family's pride in owning an impression of this portrait.
Following his approach with the Haden children, Whistler focused on the child's features with minimal setting details. A black cap on the bed's counterpane provides visual balance to the composition. Ghostly forms beneath the surface indicate an earlier image was burnished away. A hooked scratch across the sleeve (possibly added by Whistler as a cancellation mark) was present by 1883 when the Museum acquired another impression.
This etching is from the collection of Richard Bowles, who is a past Lieutenant Governor of Manitoba. Bowles was a major collector of books, letters and prints. He amassed one of the largest collections of Lincoln letters including one of 13 copies of the Emancipation Proclamation, signed by Abraham Lincoln.

James McNeill Whistler
James Abbott McNeill Whistler was born in Lowell, Massachusetts in 1834 to Anna McNeill Whistler and George Washington Whistler, a railroad engineer. The family moved frequently during his childhood, living in Connecticut and later Russia when his father was recruited to design the Saint Petersburg-Moscow Railway. After his father died of cholera in 1849, the family returned to Pomfret, Connecticut, where they lived in reduced circumstances on his mother's limited income of $1,500 annually.
Whistler attended the United States Military Academy at West Point from 1851 to 1854, where he studied drawing under Robert W. Weir but struggled academically and was eventually dismissed for poor performance in chemistry. After working briefly as a draftsman for the U.S. Coast Survey, where he learned etching techniques, he decided to pursue art seriously and moved to Paris in 1855. He studied at the École Impériale and the atelier of Charles Gleyre, where he learned the principles that line is more important than color and that black is fundamental to tonal harmony.
In Paris, Whistler became part of the artistic circle that included Gustave Courbet, Henri Fantin-Latour, Édouard Manet, and Charles Baudelaire. He moved to London in 1859 and spent most of his remaining career there, though he maintained connections with the French art world. Whistler developed his distinctive approach of giving paintings musical titles such as "nocturnes," "symphonies," and "arrangements" to emphasize tonal harmony over narrative content. His most famous work, Arrangement in Grey and Black No. 1 (1871), commonly known as Whistler's Mother, exemplifies this approach and is now housed in the Musée d'Orsay.
Whistler was a leading proponent of the "art for art's sake" philosophy and became known for his combative personality and sharp wit. His famous libel trial against critic John Ruskin in 1878, though technically won by Whistler, resulted in financial ruin due to legal costs. He was also an accomplished printmaker, producing over 500 etchings including notable series from Venice. Whistler adopted his mother's maiden name McNeill after her death in 1881 and used a stylized butterfly signature that reflected both his delicate artistic style and his aggressive personality. He died in London in 1903 at age 69.

Bidding begins at the reserve price and advances at set increments based on the bidding range. The specific bidding increments may vary from auction to auction, however the next bid and subsequent increments will always be clearly defined on detailed lot listings. Maximum Bids and Single Bids can only be placed within the pre-defined bidding increments ensuring that no two bidders can place identical bids on an item. Requests to cancel a single bid are at the sole descretion of the auctioneer. Maximum bids can be increased but cannot be decreased unless premitted by the auctioneer. Requests to cancel a bid or to alter a maximum bid will be denied if the specific lot is scheduled to close in less than 24 hours or if the lot has significant interest or activity.
To request that a bid be cancelled or to change a maximum bid use the "Ask a question" button on the detailed lot listing.
You will receive an email notification when you have successfully won an auction. You will also see the item listed on your "Bidding Results" page and if you are logged into the site you will see a highlighted message on the auction catalogue pages and auction listings.
Shipping requirements may vary on different items depending on location and size or weight of an item. When registering for a specific auction you will be provided options to clarify your preferred shipping instructions. The auctioneer will also review and provide specific shipping quotes or options following the close of an auction. If you have specific shipping requirements or are unsure of the shipping constraints on a specific item please contact the auctioneer prior to bidding.
Following the close of an auction the auctioneer will provide a detailed invoice for all items you have won. They may contact you before a final invoice is prepared to confirm or review specific shipping instructions. Payment is due once a final invoice is provided and can be submitted online by credit card, or made by EFT (Electronic Fund Transfer), bank draft or international wire transfer. Any outstanding balance will be automatically charged to your registered credit card 5 days following the close of an auction.
