George Buytendorp

1923 - 2014

George, born in the Netherlands, represents a continuation of his family's artistic legacy. He received formal training at the Academy of Fine Arts and Related Sciences, followed by a five-year apprenticeship in fine art restoration. This comprehensive education in both creation and preservation of art provided him with technical skills and an appreciation for artistic traditions that would define his later work. After establishing studios in Arnheim and later Amsterdam, George immigrated to Canada in 1951, settling in Manitoba where he quickly integrated into the Canadian art scene.

Upon arriving in Manitoba, George built a dual career as both artist and teacher, contributing to the cultural landscape of his adopted home. His work has gained recognition across Canada, appearing in numerous galleries and becoming part of significant private and corporate collections, including Peat Marwick Thorne, Kleyson Transport, Great West Life Insurance Company, and Comcheq Services. His European training combined with his Canadian experience has resulted in a body of work that bridges Old World techniques with New World perspectives, creating art that resonates with collectors and institutions throughout Canada.
