This 2020 acrylic on panel, titled Chien D’Or Island, is a significant part of Randolph Parker's extensive Lake of the Woods island series. For this project Parker spent years exploring and documenting the thousands of islands within this specific region, seeking to capture the unique character and topography of each landmass. The work is defined by its crisp, graphic clarity and a saturated palette of blues, oranges, and earthy golds, reflecting the intense light and rugged Precambrian Shield terrain characteristic of Northern Ontario.
In this piece, Parker focuses on the intricate shoreline where weathered granite meets the water. His style utilizes distinct, rhythmic brushstrokes to describe the geological layering of the rocks and the complex formation of the clouds. By naming specific locations like Chien D’Or and Queen Bee, Parker moves beyond general landscape painting to provide a visual census of the lake's geography. The series as a whole serves as both an artistic celebration and a meticulous geographic record, showcasing Parker’s ability to find monumental beauty in the smaller, often overlooked islands of the Canadian Shield.

Randolph Parker
Randolph Parker found artistic inspiration everywhere growing up and began winning awards for his art from a young age. While his family did not frequent museums or collect art, they nevertheless encouraged the young artist to pursue his passions. Before he enrolled in art school, Parker spent 3 months in seclusion in a trapper’s lodge on the edge of Algonquin park, a site of inspiration for a plethora of Canadian artists. There, Parker was able to concentrate solely on his development as an artist before his formal training began.
Mount Allison university in Sackville, New Brunswick allowed Parker to flourish artistically and experiment with new mediums. Among other courses, the artist explored printmaking under the instruction of David Silverberg. Randolph was eager to learn as much as possible from his teacher, even going as far as proposing to drop out of university and become his instructor’s assistant. Silverberg turned him down, instilling the young artist the importance of prioritising your own practice as an artist. Parker’s development continued at the Banff Centre for Arts and Creativity under artist Takao Tanabe and York University with established critic Ken Carpenter, who taught him how to be critical of his own work.
Parker’s career was enriched by becoming an instructor in watercolours and Canadian art history at the Ottawa School of Art in 1982. 8 years later, Parker began working with Mayberry Fine Art and is his longest professional relationship to date. At this time, Parker’s work was almost exclusively in watercolour, but found that working with larger canvases and acrylics allowed for more compelling results. Prominent representation soon followed and Parker showed his larger canvases of the Canadian landscape in cities like Vancouver, Calgary, Toronto and Winnipeg. He stopped teaching to focus full-time on his art.
In 2016, Parker began his latest and largest series to date: Islands, Lake of the Woods. Together with Bill Mayberry, the two friends ventured around the 14,000 islands in Lake of the Woods to capture its unique landscape. He would sketch and photograph the locations and begin compositions back at his studio on Salt Spring Island, BC. When the exhibition opened, there were over 200 paintings on display.

The buyer’s premium is an additional percentage charged to the winning bidder. The buyer’s premiums may vary from auction to auction, typically ranging from 10% to 20%. Buyer’s premiums will be displayed on detailed lot listings and paddle registration forms.
Bidding begins at the reserve price and advances at set increments based on the bidding range. The specific bidding increments may vary from auction to auction, however the next bid and subsequent increments will always be clearly defined on detailed lot listings. Maximum Bids and Single Bids can only be placed within the pre-defined bidding increments ensuring that no two bidders can place identical bids on an item. Requests to cancel a single bid are at the sole descretion of the auctioneer. Maximum bids can be increased but cannot be decreased unless premitted by the auctioneer. Requests to cancel a bid or to alter a maximum bid will be denied if the specific lot is scheduled to close in less than 24 hours or if the lot has significant interest or activity.
To request that a bid be cancelled or to change a maximum bid use the "Ask a question" button on the detailed lot listing.
You will receive an email notification when you have successfully won an auction. You will also see the item listed on your "Bidding Results" page and if you are logged into the site you will see a highlighted message on the auction catalogue pages and auction listings.
Shipping requirements may vary on different items depending on location and size or weight of an item. When registering for a specific auction you will be provided options to clarify your preferred shipping instructions. The auctioneer will also review and provide specific shipping quotes or options following the close of an auction. If you have specific shipping requirements or are unsure of the shipping constraints on a specific item please contact the auctioneer prior to bidding.
Following the close of an auction the auctioneer will provide a detailed invoice for all items you have won. They may contact you before a final invoice is prepared to confirm or review specific shipping instructions. Payment is due once a final invoice is provided and can be submitted online by credit card, or made by EFT (Electronic Fund Transfer), bank draft or international wire transfer. Any outstanding balance will be automatically charged to your registered credit card 5 days following the close of an auction.
