Leo Mol

1915 - 2009 RCA

Leo Mol (born Leonid Molodozhanyn) was a Ukrainian Canadian artist renowned for his work as a sculptor, painter, and stained glass designer. Born in 1915 in Polonne, Ukraine, Mol developed an early interest in ceramics while working in his father's pottery studio. His formal training in the arts began at the Leningrad Academy of Arts, where he honed his skills in sculpture. However, the turbulence of World War II led to his deportation to Germany, where he continued his artistic studies at the Kunst Academy in Berlin. Following the war, he relocated to the Netherlands before emigrating to Canada in 1948 with his wife, Margareth, ultimately settling in Winnipeg, Manitoba.

Mol’s artistic career in Canada flourished as he found work as a stained glass artist and sculptor. He gained recognition for his ability to capture lifelike expressions and realistic forms in his bronze sculptures, a hallmark of his classical European training. His works ranged from religious figures and wildlife to portraits of significant political and cultural leaders. Notable commissions include sculptures of Queen Elizabeth II, Pope John Paul II, Sir Winston Churchill, and Dwight D. Eisenhower. Mol’s technical mastery, combined with his deep understanding of his subjects, led to his reputation as one of Canada’s foremost sculptors.

A defining aspect of Mol’s legacy is the Leo Mol Sculpture Garden in Winnipeg’s Assiniboine Park, which was established in 1992. This outdoor gallery, which has been expanded multiple times, houses over 300 of his bronze sculptures, along with a gallery and a preserved studio space. Mol personally donated many of these works, reinforcing his commitment to making art accessible to the public. The garden remains a significant cultural landmark in Winnipeg and attracts visitors from around the world.

Beyond his contributions to sculpture, Mol’s work in stained glass is also noteworthy. He designed and installed over 80 stained glass windows in churches across Manitoba, incorporating intricate designs and religious iconography that reflected his strong connection to spiritual themes. His paintings and ceramic works further demonstrated his versatility as an artist.

Mol’s contributions to Canadian and international art earned him numerous accolades. He was named an Officer of the Order of Canada in 1989 and received the Order of Manitoba in 2000. Additionally, he was a member of the Royal Canadian Academy of Arts and an honorary academician of the Canadian Portrait Academy. His influence extended beyond his own work, as he inspired generations of artists and enriched Canada’s artistic landscape.

Leo Mol passed away in 2009 at the age of 94, leaving behind a vast and enduring artistic legacy. His sculptures, which continue to be displayed in public spaces and esteemed collections worldwide, serve as a testament to his skill and dedication. Winnipeg, the city he called home for much of his life, remains deeply connected to his artistic contributions through the ongoing preservation and celebration of his work.
