Jim McKenzie

Jim McKenzie (b. 1953) is a Canadian artist recognized for his hyper-detailed realist landscapes, particularly of coastal British Columbia. Born in New Westminster and raised in the Fraser Valley, McKenzie developed an early appreciation for the natural beauty of the West Coast. He studied at the University of British Columbia, earning a Bachelor of Fine Arts in 1975, and has worked as a professional artist ever since. His paintings, which capture the quiet stillness and intricate textures of the landscape, are included in both corporate and private collections across Canada.

McKenzie's work is influenced by Canadian realist painters such as Jack Chambers, Alex Colville, Christopher Pratt, Ken Danby, and E.J. Hughes, as well as the broader international Hyper-Realist movement of the 1970s. He paints from his own photographs, drawing on personal experiences to create compositions that emphasize light, atmosphere, and precise detail. Currently based on Mayne Island, British Columbia, he continues to explore the region’s landscapes through his distinctive realist approach.
