Hugo Frones

Hugo Frones was born in Uruguay in 1950 and immigrated to Canada in 1975, where he now makes his home in Toronto. A self-taught artist, Frones graduated with a degree in technical and design drafting and has been painting professionally for over 20 years. His work has been exhibited in Canada and internationally, including shows in Spain, Uruguay, Argentina, and the United States.

Since the late 1980s, Frones has worked under the influence of abstract expressionism. His artistic approach is primarily intuitive rather than cerebral, despite the complex formal relationships evident in his paintings. Working with acrylic paint on canvas, Frones is particularly drawn to warm colors that evoke a Mediterranean atmosphere. His distinctive style features spontaneous and intuitive brushstrokes of bold paint that give his work its final touch.

Frones' creative process explores what he calls the "control and chance concept," where the subject is discovered and rediscovered during the creation of each piece. As he describes it, "I feel a poetic intelligence working through me. Within a concise vocabulary of visual elements, I approach each painting with an intuitive sense of where I want to go and how I will get there." This evolving process continually enhances the visual quality of his work, with each piece containing something of the artist himself.

Throughout his career, Frones has won numerous awards for his paintings and has been invited by juries to participate in many group exhibitions. His powerful abstract canvases, varying in scale according to his intuitive sense of composition, are held in private collections internationally.
