Gwyneth Travers

Gwyneth Mabel Gwillim Travers (1911-1982) was a Canadian artist and printmaker born in Kingston, Ontario. After earning her BA from Queen's University in 1933, she developed a serious interest in art in the mid-1930s when painter Goodridge Roberts conducted art classes at Queen's. She continued her artistic education studying painting and printmaking under notable instructors including André Bieler, George Swinton, and Ralph Allen at Queen's University Art Centre.

Travers specialized in woodcut printmaking, a direction influenced by her studies with George Swinton. Her technical approach involved using four separate wood blocks to create four-color prints, printing one on top of another. She achieved distinctive textural details and surface patterns by selecting different types of wood with varying grains and surfaces. While she explored abstraction and figure studies, her primary subject matter featured Kingston's architecture—its university buildings, churches, waterfront scenes, and historic streetscapes, many of which have since disappeared.

In 1972, the Agnes Etherington Art Centre organized a solo exhibition titled "Gwyneth Travers: Kingston Woodcuts 1955-1972," featuring 32 color woodcuts created over 17 years. The exhibition statement praised her ability to capture "the massive strength and subtle beauty of Kingston's limestone architecture" through her masterful use of wood textures and complementary color palette, noting the "maturity and control that has been achieved through years of experimentation and consistent hard work."

Throughout her career, Travers was recognized with numerous awards and held memberships in prestigious art organizations including the Royal Canadian Academy of Arts (RCA), Ontario Society of Artists (OSA), Society of Canadian Painter-Etchers and Engravers (CPE), and the Canadian Group of Painters (CGP). Her work is represented in major collections including the National Gallery of Canada, Queen's University, Winnipeg Art Gallery, and Montreal Museum of Fine Arts. Her artistic legacy continues through the Gwyneth Travers Internship at Queen's University, which supports students working or taking classes at the Agnes Etherington Art Centre.
