David Umholtz

David C. Umholtz was born in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, in 1943. He studied art education in Pennsylvania before immigrating to Canada in 1973, where he began a multifaceted career as an artist, master printer, and educator. He lived and worked in Winnipeg, where he founded the influential Moosehead Press in 1977, and later settled on Deer Island, New Brunswick, exhibiting his work across North America.  

Umholtz's artistic style is recognized for its evolution from systematic geometric abstraction to a personal, cartographic exploration of place. His subject matter focused on geography and the maritime environment, which served as a vehicle for his investigation into how we map and perceive the world. His primary media were in printmaking, including lithographs, woodcuts, and etchings, alongside paintings and works on paper.  

His work is included in numerous public and corporate collections, such as the Canada Council Art Bank, the Remai Modern, the New Brunswick Art Bank, and the Beaverbrook Art Gallery
