Johnniebo Ashevak, Cape Dorset

(1923-1972)

Born in 1923, Johnniebo Ashevak lived mainly in the Cape Dorset (Kinngait) region with his wife, Kenojuak Ashevak, one of the most acclaimed Inuit artists in the world. The couple often worked together on carvings and drawings until Johnniebo’s premature death in 1972. His work portrayed animals, humans and spirits, often metamorphosing into one another. Transformation is a powerful subject in Inuit spirituality and a common theme in Inuit art, often including depictions of shamans, bears, birds, sea animals.
