Terry Fenton

Terry Fenton is a Canadian visual artist, museum administrator, writer, and art critic. Born in Regina, Saskatchewan, he pursued his post-secondary education at the University of Saskatchewan's Regina Campus, earning a Bachelor of Arts degree in 1962. He continued his formal artistic training by attending the Emma Lake Artists' Workshops during the 1960s, where he studied under prominent international modernist artists and critics, including Clement Greenberg, Jules Olitski, and Kenneth Noland.

Fenton began his career in arts administration at the Norman Mackenzie Art Gallery in Regina, serving as an assistant to the director from 1965 to 1972. In 1972, he was appointed Director of the Edmonton Art Gallery (now the Art Gallery of Alberta), a position he held until 1987. During his fifteen-year tenure in Edmonton, he organized numerous exhibitions focused on modern abstraction, Western Canadian landscape painting, and contemporary art. He later served as the Director of the Leighton Arts Centre near Millarville, Alberta, and as the Director of the Mendel Art Gallery in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, from 1998 to 2002.

Alongside his administrative career, Fenton maintained an active studio practice as a painter, specializing in landscapes rendered in oil and acrylic. His work frequently features the topography of Western Canada, particularly the open spaces of the Canadian Prairies, the Saskatchewan countryside, and the Alberta foothills. His painterly approach emphasizes atmosphere, expanse, horizon lines, and the interaction of light across rural terrain.

In addition to his studio work and curatorial duties, Fenton has contributed extensively to Canadian art scholarship as an author and critic. He has written multiple exhibition catalogues, essays, and monographs on Canadian and international modern art, including major publications on artists such as Jack Bush and Olitski. He was elected a member of the Alberta Society of Artists (ASA) and was appointed a Member of the Order of Canada (CM) in 2016 for his contributions to the Canadian visual arts community as a gallery director, critic, and painter. His artwork is represented in public institutional holdings, including the collection of the Alberta Foundation for the Arts.
