William Marshall Brown, ARSA, RSA, RSW, SSA

1863 - 1936

William Marshall Brown, RSA, RSW (January 3, 1863 - April 24, 1936) was a Scottish painter born in Edinburgh, Scotland. As a youth, he was engaged in wood engraving. He studied at the Royal Institution School of Art and was a member of the Royal Scottish Academy Life School from 1884 to 1888, winning the Stuart Prize and the Chalmers Bursary.

He is known for his figurative paintings, landscapes, and coastal scenes, often depicting rural life in Scotland and France. His style was influenced by the plein air (outdoor painting) practice and the work of French realist painters like Jules Bastien-Lepage. His work is characterized by its realistic depiction of light and atmosphere. Like many of his contemporaries associated with the 'Glasgow School,' Brown found Cockburnspath a useful base and kept a studio there, producing some of his best work.

He was elected an Associate of the Royal Scottish Academy (ARSA) in 1909 and a full member (RSA) in 1928. He was also elected a member of the Royal Scottish Society of Painters in Watercolour (RSW) in 1929 and was an original member of the Society of Scottish Artists.
