Salvador Dali

1904 - 1989

Salvador Dalí was a Spanish surrealist painter, sculptor, printmaker, and writer born in Figueres, Catalonia, Spain. He received his early artistic training at the Municipal Drawing School in Figueres before enrolling at the Real Academia de Bellas Artes de San Fernando in Madrid in 1921. During his studies in Madrid, he experimented with Cubism, Dada, and classicism, while developing relationships with other Spanish cultural figures, including poet Federico García Lorca and filmmaker Luis Buñuel.

In 1926, Dalí traveled to Paris, where he met Pablo Picasso and joined the Surrealist group led by André Breton. During the late 1920s and 1930s, he developed his "paranoiac-critical method," a mental framework designed to access the subconscious mind to generate creative imagery. This period saw the production of some of his most recognized oil paintings, including The Persistence of Memory (1931), which incorporated motifs such as melting clocks, distorted landscapes, and symbolic fauna.

Dalí relocated to the United States in 1940 to escape the Second World War in Europe. During his eight-year stay in the United States, he expanded his practice beyond easel painting into theatre design, jewelry design, commercial illustration, and filmmaking, collaborating with figures such as Alfred Hitchcock and Walt Disney. Upon returning to Catalonia in 1948, his stylistic focus shifted toward classical technique, religious subjects, and scientific concepts, a phase he described as "Nuclear Mysticism."

Throughout the latter half of his career, Dalí completed major large-scale compositions, illustrated classic literature, and designed three-dimensional installations. In 1974, he established the Dalí Theatre-Museum in his hometown of Figueres to house a broad selection of his works. His artwork is preserved in the permanent collections of major public institutions worldwide, including the Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofía in Madrid, the Salvador Dalí Museum in St. Petersburg, Florida, and the Museum of Modern Art in New York. He lived and worked in Catalonia until his death in 1989.
