Sarah Robertson

Sarah Margaret Armour Robertson (1891–1948) was a Canadian painter primarily known for her landscapes, still lifes, and portraits. Born in Montreal, she began her formal art education at the age of nineteen after receiving the Wood Scholarship to study at the Art Association of Montreal. During this period, she trained under notable instructors William Brymner and Maurice Cullen. Her education was briefly interrupted by World War I, but she continued her studies from 1921 to 1924 under Randolph Hewton.

In 1920, Robertson became a founding member of the Beaver Hall Group, a Montreal-based collective of artists known for their modernist approach and inclusion of women. She maintained close professional relationships with fellow members, particularly Prudence Heward, and frequently participated in sketching trips to regions such as the Laurentians, the Lower St. Lawrence, and Nova Scotia. In 1933, she further established her professional standing as a founding member of the Canadian Group of Painters (CGP).

Throughout her career, Robertson's work was included in several significant public exhibitions. She exhibited with the Group of Seven in 1928, 1930, and 1931, and her work was represented in the 1924 and 1925 British Empire Exhibitions in Wembley, England. International showings of her work also occurred at the Yale University Art Gallery in 1944 and the Museu Nacional de Belas Artes in Rio de Janeiro.

Her artistic style evolved from earlier influences of French Impressionism and Fauvism toward a more personal and spontaneous modernist expression. This transition is often noted in works from the late 1930s, such as Coronation (1937). Following her death in Montreal in 1948, the National Gallery of Canada organized a memorial exhibition of her work in 1951, which later circulated across the country.

Sarah Robertson's paintings are held in the permanent collections of major public institutions, including the National Gallery of Canada, the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts, the Art Gallery of Ontario, and the University of Alberta.
