Andrew Benyei

Andrew Benyei is a Canadian sculptor and visual artist born in Toronto, Ontario. He pursued his post-secondary education at the University of Toronto, earning a Bachelor of Applied Science in Structural Engineering in 1981. Following his engineering studies, he transitioned to visual art and studied sculpture and drawing at the Ontario College of Art (now OCAD University) from 1982 to 1985. His background in engineering provided a foundational understanding of structural integrity and materials, which he integrated into his spatial artwork.

Benyei’s studio practice focuses primarily on figurative sculpture, working across mediums such as cast bronze, terracotta, wood, and mixed media. His compositions depict everyday human interactions, urban figures, and narrative genre scenes. His approach emphasizes figurative posture, gesture, and social dynamics, capturing moments of daily life with a focus on physical form and spatial composition.

Throughout his career, Benyei has completed several public sculpture commissions. In 2011, he created a series of bronze reliefs commissioned for the City of Toronto. His public installation work includes outdoor bronze sculptures created for municipal spaces, transit areas, and public parks in Ontario.

Benyei’s artwork has been featured in public museum and municipal exhibitions in Canada. His work is represented in public, institutional, and corporate collections, including the City of Toronto art collection and the permanent holdings of the Art Gallery of Mississauga.
