Silvano Campeggi, who often signed his work as "Nano," was an Italian painter and poster designer known for his poster designs during the mid-twentieth century. Born in Florence, Italy, Campeggi was introduced to design early in life by his father, a printer and typesetter. He received his formal artistic training at the Istituto d'Arte at Porta Romana in Florence, where he studied painting under artists such as Ottone Rosai and Ardengo Soffici. Following the end of the Second World War, Campeggi moved to Rome to pursue commercial art, illustrating military periodicals before transitioning to film promotion.
In the late 1940s, Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer commissioned Campeggi to create the Italian poster for the release of Casablanca. This project launched a long career with major Hollywood film studios, including MGM, Warner Bros., Paramount Pictures, and Universal Pictures. Over the course of three decades, Campeggi produced advertising graphics, promotional artwork, and posters for over 3,000 motion pictures. His key works include promotional designs for prominent films of the era, such as Singin' in the Rain, An American in Paris, Ben-Hur, Gigi, West Side Story, Breakfast at Tiffany's, and Cat on a Hot Tin Roof.
In the 1970s, as photographic imagery gradually replaced painted illustration in film marketing, Campeggi shifted his artistic focus toward traditional painting, portraiture, and historical series. His later works included portrait commissions and thematic historical cycles, such as a series dedicated to the Battle of Campaldino. Campeggi returned to Florence, where he lived and worked until his death on August 29, 2018, at the age of 95. His graphic work remains recognized within international public archives and museum collections dedicated to cinematic history and graphic design.
