Tim Schouten

Tim Schouten, RCA (b. 1954) is a Canadian visual artist and educator based in Winnipeg, Manitoba. Born in Winnipeg, he pursued his post-secondary education at the University of Manitoba, earning a Bachelor of Arts degree in 1977 and a Bachelor of Fine Arts (Honours) degree from the University of Manitoba School of Art in 1984.

Schouten's studio practice centers on encaustic painting, a medium utilizing beeswax and pigment, alongside drawing and printmaking. His work engages with history, place, and the cultural landscape of Western Canada. A significant body of his work explores historical sites, including Treaty territories and locations associated with the 1870 Manitoba Act and the North-West Resistance, examining the intersection of geography, memory, and Canadian history.

Throughout his career, Schouten has been active in the artist-run culture and arts organization sector in Manitoba. He served on the board of directors for several Winnipeg arts organizations, including Plug In Institute of Contemporary Art, CARFAC Manitoba, and Video Pool Media Arts Centre. He has also contributed to art education as an instructor at the University of Manitoba School of Art.

In 2011, Schouten was elected to the Royal Canadian Academy of Arts (RCA) in recognition of his contributions to Canadian visual art. His work has been featured in public museum exhibitions, including at the Winnipeg Art Gallery, and is represented in public and institutional collections such as the Manitoba Arts Council Art Bank and the Winnipeg Art Gallery.
