Robert Pasternak

Robert Pasternak (b. 1963) is a Canadian visual artist, illustrator, graphic designer, and filmmaker based in Winnipeg, Manitoba. A self-taught practitioner, Pasternak began creating art in the late 1980s. Alongside his studio practice, he has worked professionally as a production artist, art director, digital colorist, and freelance graphic designer.

Pasternak gained early recognition for his science fiction and speculative art, contributing cover and interior illustrations to publications such as Amazing Stories and On Spec magazine, as well as various book covers. In 1994, he received the Aurora Award for achievement in Canadian science fiction art. Expanding into moving images, his experimental short film The Affirmation of Jimmy Brown was selected for screening at the Venice Film Festival in 2004.

In 2015, the Central Canada Comic Convention established the Pasternak Award in his honor to recognize local Winnipeg artists. Pasternak has also expanded his practice into published narrative art, including his graphic novel Place Into Being, published by At Bay Press in 2019.
