Rocky Fiddler

Rocky Fiddler (born 1959) is a Cree artist from the Sandy Lake First Nation in Northwestern Ontario. Born on February 14, 1959, he was raised in a community where the traditional lifestyle and oral histories shared by elders significantly informed his early creative development. Fiddler is primarily recognized for his work within the Woodland style of painting, characterized by bold outlines and the depiction of spiritual and animal subjects.

In the mid 1970s, Fiddler was mentored by the prominent artist Carl Ray, a founding member of the Professional Native Indian Artists Inc. Under Ray's guidance, Fiddler learned to translate sacred legends and traditional values into visual forms. Following the death of Carl Ray in 1978, Fiddler continued to refine his technical approach, moving toward a style often described as softer and more detailed while maintaining a focus on the animal spirit domain and the relationship between traditional culture and modern life.

Fiddler's artistic contributions were formally acknowledged in 1980 when he received an achievement award from the Ontario All Chiefs Conference. This citation recognized his work for its role in preserving and communicating traditional native values and principles. Despite facing significant physical challenges from debilitating arthritis during this period, he remained active in his practice, dedicating several bodies of work to the memory of his mentor.

The work of Rocky Fiddler has been featured in public presentations throughout Ontario and Manitoba. His paintings and prints are held in institutional collections that focus on Indigenous art and Canadian heritage, reflecting his position within the second generation of Woodland style artists. His career remains defined by a commitment to the intergenerational transmission of Cree stories and the visual documentation of his community's history.
