Corgi

Corgi Toys was launched in 1956 by Mettoy Playcraft Ltd., a British die-cast toy manufacturer based in Swansea, Wales. The brand was created to compete with Dinky Toys, the market leader in die-cast model vehicles at the time. Corgi differentiated itself by introducing features like plastic windows, detailed interiors, opening doors and hoods, and spring suspension, which were innovations in the die-cast toy market. The name "Corgi" was chosen to emphasize the brand's Welsh origins. The company produced scale model cars, trucks, commercial vehicles, and later added character vehicles based on popular media.

Corgi Toys achieved significant commercial success and cultural recognition in the 1960s and 1970s, particularly with its entertainment-licensed vehicles. The James Bond Aston Martin DB5 from "Goldfinger," released in 1965 with working ejector seat and other gadgets, became one of the best-selling toy cars ever produced, with millions sold. Other popular models included the Batmobile from the 1960s Batman TV series, vehicles from "The Man from U.N.C.L.E.," and Chitty Chitty Bang Bang. These tie-in products helped establish Corgi as a major player in the toy vehicle market during this era and made certain models highly collectible.

Corgi Toys faced financial difficulties in the 1980s as the toy market changed and competition increased. The original company went through bankruptcy and ownership changes, with production eventually moving from Wales. The Corgi brand has continued under various owners, currently producing both toys and detailed collectible models aimed at adult collectors rather than children. Vintage Corgi Toys from the 1960s and 1970s, particularly rare variants and entertainment vehicles in good condition with original boxes, command significant prices in the collectibles market. The brand maintains recognition among die-cast toy collectors and those interested in mid-century British toys.
