Alan Wylie

Alan Wylie was a Scottish-born Canadian painter and muralist known for his work in city scenes, landscapes, and marine subjects. Born in Glasgow, he attended the Glasgow School of Art, where he graduated in 1960 with a degree in Mural Design and Mosaics. Following his graduation, he completed several significant public commissions in Scotland, including twenty-four mosaic panels for the Charles Rennie Mackintosh School of Art.

In 1967, Wylie immigrated to Nova Scotia, where he established a career as a full-time artist and educator. During his time in Atlantic Canada, his work was recognized with awards such as the Don J. Oland Trophy in 1968. He moved to British Columbia in the mid-1970s, eventually settling in the historic village of Fort Langley. His career in Western Canada was marked by a heavy involvement with the Federation of Canadian Artists (FCA), where he achieved Senior Signature status in 1979 and served as President from 1986 to 1987.

Wylie was an accomplished muralist with over forty-five completed works across Scotland, Canada, and the United States. One of his most notable Canadian projects is a 100-foot outdoor mural in Chemainus, British Columbia. In addition to his large-scale public works, he was a prolific painter in oil, acrylic, and watercolor. He was a member of several professional organizations, including the American Watercolor Society, the Canadian Society of Marine Artists, and the Canadian Society of Painters in Water Colour.

Throughout his professional life, Wylie participated in more than seventy-five solo exhibitions and numerous group shows internationally. He received the Spilsbury Gold Medal from the Federation of Canadian Artists on multiple occasions and was awarded the FCA Lifetime Achievement Award in 2007. His work was also included in the First International Contemporary Watercolor Exhibition in China, and he was appointed an honorary member of the Jiangsu Watercolor Research Institute.

His paintings are represented in several public and institutional collections, including St. Mary’s University in Halifax and the University of New Brunswick Art Centre. Wylie continued to teach and exhibit until his death in 2022, leaving a legacy defined by technical proficiency in various media and a significant contribution to the development of representational art in Canada.
