Alan Wood

Alan Wood (1935–2017) was a British-born Canadian painter, sculptor, and printmaker known for his large-scale environmental installations and exploration of light and color. Born in Widnes, Lancashire, England, Wood studied at the Liverpool College of Art from 1954 to 1959. Before immigrating to Canada, he spent time at the St. Ives artists' colony in Cornwall and taught for six years at the Cardiff College of Art in Wales. He moved to Canada in 1971 and eventually settled in Vancouver, British Columbia, in 1974, where he spent the remainder of his professional life.

Wood gained international recognition in 1983 for his monumental project titled Ranch. This 320-acre environmental installation was constructed in the foothills of the Alberta Rockies and consisted of a massive series of painted wood and canvas structures. The work served as a multi-dimensional exploration of the shapes and colors associated with Western ranching culture and the natural landscape. This project significantly influenced his subsequent practice, leading him to create further three-dimensional constructions and relief sculptures that bridged the gap between painting and environmental art.

Throughout his career in Canada, Wood’s work remained focused on the dynamics of the natural world, specifically the forests, beaches, and skies of the Pacific Northwest. His technical approach often involved the use of layered plywood, canvas, and vivid acrylic paints to create textured, abstract interpretations of organic forms. In addition to his studio practice, Wood was a dedicated educator, teaching painting at Capilano College in North Vancouver and serving as an artist-in-residence at the University of Cincinnati.

Wood was elected a member of the Royal Canadian Academy of Arts and received commissions for public murals from the government of British Columbia and various academic institutions. His work was the subject of a survey exhibition at the Art Gallery of Greater Victoria in 1982 and has been included in numerous museum presentations across North America, Europe, and Australia.

The artworks of Alan Wood are represented in several prominent public collections. These include the National Gallery of Canada, the Vancouver Art Gallery, the Burnaby Art Gallery, and the Art Gallery of Greater Victoria. His work is also held internationally by the Tate Gallery and the National Museum Cardiff in the United Kingdom, as well as several university galleries in Australia.
