Alice Cooper

Alice Cooper, born Vincent Furnier, launched his solo career in 1975 after the dissolution of the Alice Cooper band. Furnier legally changed his name to Alice Cooper and released "Welcome to My Nightmare" as his first solo album. The album reached number 5 on the Billboard 200 and was accompanied by a television special that aired on ABC. The supporting tour featured an elaborate theatrical production based on the album's concept, establishing Cooper's approach to solo performances. The single "Only Women Bleed" became a top 40 hit, demonstrating his ability to achieve commercial success as a solo artist.

Cooper released several albums in the late 1970s including "Alice Cooper Goes to Hell" (1976), "Lace and Whiskey" (1977), and "From the Inside" (1978). "From the Inside" was co-written with Bernie Taupin and drew on Cooper's experiences in rehabilitation for alcoholism. The album "Flush the Fashion" (1980) saw Cooper experimenting with new wave influences, followed by "Special Forces" (1981) and "Zipper Catches Skin" (1982). During this period, his commercial performance declined and he faced ongoing struggles with alcohol addiction, which he addressed through treatment in 1983.

The mid-1980s marked a transitional period in Cooper's career. He released "DaDa" in 1983, followed by "Constrictor" in 1986, which began his association with horror film soundtracks and a return to heavier rock music. "Raise Your Fist and Yell" (1987) continued in this direction. Cooper also began appearing in films and television, including a notable role in the 1987 horror film "Prince of Darkness" directed by John Carpenter. These years represented a rebuilding phase as he worked to regain his commercial standing.

Cooper's career resurgence came with the 1989 album "Trash," produced by Desmond Child. The album reached number 20 on the Billboard 200 and spawned the hit single "Poison," which peaked at number 7 on the Billboard Hot 100 and received significant MTV airplay. This success reestablished Cooper as a commercially viable artist and introduced him to a new generation of fans. The follow-up album "Hey Stoopid" (1991) continued this momentum, featuring collaborations with several prominent rock musicians and reaching number 47 on the Billboard 200.

Throughout the 1990s and 2000s, Cooper maintained a consistent recording and touring schedule. Albums during this period included "The Last Temptation" (1994), "Brutal Planet" (2000), and "Dragontown" (2001). He continued to tour extensively, maintaining his elaborate theatrical stage shows featuring guillotines, electric chairs, and other horror-themed props. Cooper was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2011 alongside his original bandmates. He has continued releasing albums into the 2020s, including "Paranormal" (2017), "Detroit Stories" (2021), and "Road" (2023).

Cooper's solo career has spanned nearly five decades and includes over 20 studio albums. He has maintained his theatrical shock rock approach throughout his career while adapting to changing musical trends. His influence is documented in the work of numerous artists in heavy metal, industrial rock, and theatrical rock performance. Cooper has also pursued various media appearances, including radio hosting and acting roles, while maintaining an active touring schedule that has made him one of the most enduring performers in rock music.
