Tukiki Manomie

Tukiki Manomie was an Inuit sculptor born in the Kinngait (Cape Dorset) region of Baffin Island, Northwest Territories (now Nunavut). Raised in a traditional land-based environment, he spent his youth in seasonal camps along the southern coast of Baffin Island before establishing his residence in the settlement of Kinngait.

In the late 1950s, Manomie began carving stone in connection with the development of the West Baffin Eskimo Co-operative. Working primarily in local soapstone (steatite) and serpentinite, his studio practice focused on three-dimensional depictions of Arctic fauna, including polar bears, walruses, and birds, alongside figurative representations of hunting and traditional camp life. His visual style is characterized by balanced proportions, polished stone surfaces, and dynamic representations of animal movement.

Over the course of his career, Manomie contributed to the international recognition of Kinngait sculpture. His artwork was selected for inclusion in public museum surveys of contemporary Arctic visual art and is represented in permanent institutional collections, including the National Gallery of Canada, the Winnipeg Art Gallery, the Canadian Museum of History, and the McMichael Canadian Art Collection.
