"Tommy Gun" marked The Clash's first UK Top 20 hit, reaching #19 in November 1978 with its machine-gun guitar riff mimicking actual gunfire sounds that Joe Strummer created using palm-muted downstrokes. The B-side "1-2 Crush on You" was recorded at London's Marquee Studios in June 1978, capturing the band's raw live energy during sessions that bridged their debut album and "Give 'Em Enough Rope." The single's controversial lyrics about urban violence and its driving reggae-influenced rhythm helped establish The Clash's crossover appeal beyond punk's core audience, directly influencing the ska-punk movement of the 1990s.
